The Creation of the GPGP

Believe it or not, the build up of this monster garbage collection is not the workings of an evil mastermind or a sinister waste corporation. In many ways it was accidental.

Oceanic currents in the Pacific pull debris along the continental coastlines of North America, Asia and the Hawaiian Islands in series of circular cycles combining everything that we throw out into a concentrated bouillabaisse of garbage.

But don’t brush off that guilty conscience too quickly, that plastic could’ve come from our very own bins and may very well still live in this water wasteland.
